My Responsibilities:

I was responsible for implementing a high-level design and story into an interesting and visually appealing level using Unreal Engine 3.
This includes:
Creating Level Layout, Flow, Quests Progression, Balancing difficulty, Level Scripting, Cutscenes, Level Art, Lighting, Post-Processes, Testing and Documentation.

Short Breakdown

A short breakdown showing different phases of the map creation process. In general, the process goes as follows:

  1. I start from defining the shape and the scale of the map. Then add main gameplay elements such as Towns, Gameplay Buildings, Enemies, Gates, Dungeon entrances, etc.
  2. Then I work with flow and layout of the level. There’re usually several iterations and tweaks based on the playtests. At this phase, I also add quests progression, do some basic balancing to build a difficulty curve and pacing.
  3. After the layout is greenlit by the Lead Level Designer, I start to sculpt and add more details to it. Details that add muscles and shapes to a level and at the same time support a story.
  4. This process continues until the major features of the level are all shaped up and play-tested well. The time spent here also depends on set deadlines.
  5. After the level is playable from start to finish as intended and without severe bugs and also there’s some time left before release/switch to a next level, there’s a Polish Phase. Usually, this time is planned from the very beginning. At this phase, I fix less severe, not gameplay related bugs. And add more beauty to the level here and there.
